Summer Newsletter 2025 I am happy to share this summer newsletter with you. Time is flying by and it is hard to believe it is almost summer again. We have been very busy as usual here at The Little Flower. We continue to serve meals in house Monday to Friday, to deliver meals on wheels for 365 days per year and to support local food banks by donating food for food parcels. Many people are telling us how hard it is to put food on the table and to afford to eat. In response, we are trying to help more people. We are setting up a two-way referral system with Alone. At the moment Alone can refer new people for our meals on wheels service, and soon we will be able to refer people we know to Alone for their services. We are also producing leaflets for distribution at local food banks and soup kitchens to make more people aware of our in-house dining services. We are here to help as many people as we can, and we are able to do that thanks to you. So, a big thank you to you and all our donors for making everything we do possible. Yours sincerely, Ruth Harkness General Manager Free Meals Served Every Weekday At the Little Flower Penny Dinners, we open our doors every weekday at 12:00 PM to offer a nutritious meal including a dessert and tea free of charge to anyone in need. Donations are always accepted but never required from people visiting our meal service. If you or someone you know is unsure where the next meal is coming from, please know you are welcome at our dining space at 11 Meath Street, Dublin 8. We do not solely serve warm meals but we provide a safe space for people to socialise and feel welcomed. We are here to help - with no questions asked. The awards event took place in St Catherine’s Church on Thursday 8th May. At a time in their lives when many people start to relax and take things easy, Denis and Margaret are dedicated to delivering meals on wheels. It is not an easy job, up and down flights of stairs in blocks of flats to make sure people get their meals. People are always their number one priority. They watch out if people are not their normal selves or if they need support. Denis and Margaret are a huge asset to the community. Thank you so much to Denis and Margaret who volunteer and help to deliver thousands of meals – we are so lucky to have you both on the team! We are grateful to the individuals, community groups, local businesses, and corporate partners that make donations to the Little Flower Penny Dinners. Your support is what makes it possible for us to keep doing what we do. While we cannot possibly list every generous act of kindness here, we would love to share just a few recent highlights that have made a big difference. Action 24A huge thank you to Ciaran and the team from Action 24 who earlier in the year dropped by once again with another van filled with food. Steiner School Bake SaleFor the second year in a row we had our neighbours from the Steiner School hosting a charity bake sale in the Little Flower with tons of baked goods. Donal's Story Champlain College held a tour of The Liberties just before Christmas 2024. The tour ended in The Little Flower where everyone sat down and had a cup of tea and a chat. The Moody family were part of the tour. Three generations were there. Donal grew up in the tenements in Pimlico. He entertained us all with great stories of life back when he was a little boy in the Liberties. He and his brother along with their parents lived in two rooms in Pimlico. Sadly, their father died very young leaving his mother with two children to raise on her own. This was a familiar story in the area. Very shortly after their father’s death the landlord told them they were no longer entitled to two rooms and moved them into one room. Their mother worked as a cleaner for the priests across the road in St. Catherine’s. There was a school there too and Donal attended that school. Part of his mother’s duties was to light the thirty seven fires in the school in time for role call. Donal would leave home early in the mornings with his mother and help her light the fires. When all the fires were set and the school was ready to open Donal would cross the road to the Little Flower for a bite to eat. It had been years since Donal had been here but he was delighted to be back and to see all the changes that had been made. Dublin Marathon 2025 The Little Flower has 6 fundraising spots available for the 2025 Dublin Marathon and 4 of them have already been filled with people choosing to run for our charity. We are excited to have Nicola running the Dublin Marathon in support of Little Flower Penny Dinners in October this year. Originally from Italy, Nicola has been living in Ireland for over a decade but recently decided to enter Priesthood and is currently studying to become a Priest here in Ireland. He is also an avid runner and recently completed the Rome Marathon so when he found out about our charity named after the Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (the Little Flower), he knew that it was the perfect charity to run for. We are very thankful to Nicola and all the other runners for their support and dedication. Manage Cookie Preferences
